CSGEHM-Summer Institute in Sex and Gender+ Science Travel Awards Training Opportunity

Many of you will be aware that the NHMRC has recently strengthened their Statement on Sex, Gender, Variations of Sex Characteristics and Sexual orientation by requiring all funding applicants to account for these variables in their funding applications from 2026 onwards. This is a very welcome policy change that brings Australia in line with international counterparts, including Canada and Europe. We at The Centre for Sex & Gender Equity in Health & Medicine are supporting these changes through capacity building activities that can help people understand why these policies are useful, what it actually means to take these variables into account when conducting research, how it can increase the quality and reliability of your own research, and how you can start doing it better.

The Canadian Institutes of Health Research Institute of Gender and Health (CIHG-IGH) were amongst the early pioneers in this field and we have much to learn from them. Each Canadian Summer, the CIHR-IGH run a Summer Institute on Sex and Gender Science for ECRs (PhD candidates and post-docs). This year, The Centre for Sex & Gender Equity in Health & Medicine will be sponsoring two Australian ECRs to attend the Summer Institute, with all costs (flights, accommodation, registration fees, meals) fully covered. It will be an excellent opportunity for those who are interested in improving integration of sex or gender considerations into their own work, to learn from global experts in the field, develop collaborations, and will likely assist you in your own NHMRC applications. I will be attending the Institute as a mentor so there will be at least one familiar face there.

I really encourage anyone who is interested to apply, and feel free to contact the Centre if you have any questions.
