World-first global summit to End Diabetes Stigma announced

The Institute’s Australian Centre for Behavioural Research in Diabetes (ACBRD) is proud to announce the inaugural Global Summit to End Diabetes Stigma, a world-first event that will bring together advocates and global leaders, united in bringing an end to diabetes stigma and discrimination.

Funded by Breakthrough T1D (formerly JDRF), the leading global type 1 diabetes research and advocacy organisation, the Global Summit will take place in India (venue and date to be announced).

National Health and Medical Research Strategy Chair Webinar 2, 2.00pm Mon 7 April 2025 AEST

On 2 May 2024, the Minister for Health and Aged Care, the Hon Mark Butler MP, announced the development of a National Health and Medical Research Strategy (National Strategy).  The purpose of the National Strategy is to deliver a plan to strengthen and leverage Australia’s world-leading research capability, delivering better health outcomes from a productive and efficient research ecosystem. It will articulate to the strategic plans and decision making across stakeholder groups as well as consider Australia’s global context, including areas of national strength and capability gaps.   

In this webinar, the Chair of the National Strategy, will provide an overview of the: 

  1. National Health and Medical Research Workforce Audit findings 
  2. Community focus group project findings 
  3. National Health and Medical Research Funding Landscape Review findings 
  4. Ways in which the health and medical research sector can be involved in future consultation activities on the National Strategy. 

  There will also be an opportunity to ask questions following the presentation.

The Future of Food Policy in an Uncertain World Hybrid Symposium, 10.30am Wed 16 April 2025

This free hybrid symposium brings together global and national experts to examine how political and economic uncertainty is shaping the future of food policy. How we respond to global uncertainty will determine whether we can build resilient, equitable, and sustainable food systems in the years ahead. Media advice panel – Using news media to your advantage, 11am Wed 16 April 2025

This online media training panel hosted by Deakin’s Media team will focus on providing real-world advice ‘straight from the horse’s mouth’ of academic staff at Deakin already experienced at engaging with the media.

Topics covered will include how our experts prepare for interviews, how they develop their key messages, why they choose to engage with the media, how they handle tricky questions from journalists, advice for dealing with nerves and much more.  

A Deakin media team member will be on the panel to provide insight on how newsrooms operate and tips for what to do when contacted by a journalist, and there will be time for an audience Q&A at the end. This session suits early career researchers and other academic staff inexperienced with dealing with the media but wanting to know more about how to leverage the media to their advantage.

In this one-hour Zoom session, Liz will cover:

  • what sort of ideas the editors are seeking

  • how editors decide what pitches to accept
  • what happens if you get accepted/rejected
  • how to write for The Conversation’s non-academic readership
