Rainbow Connections Exhibition Opening, 5.30pm Fri 9 August 2024

This exhibition showcases portrait photography by Fiona Wolf as an output of research undertaken by Dr Louisa Smith from Deakin’s School of Health and Social Development and Institute of Health Transformation. All are welcome to the exhibition launch 5.30pm Fri 9 August 2024 and the exhibition runs 3 August – 27 October 2024 at the Burwood Library Exhibition space. RSVP for the launch here.

Rainbow Connections was co-developed with LGBT+ people living with dementia and their peers who wanted to make their lives and relationships visible. The exhibition focuses on four people living with dementia and LGBT+ peers who are important to them. These relationships with peers – some of which are facilitated by the Aged Care Community Visitors Scheme – not only affirm and celebrate gender and sexuality diversity, but in some cases provide the only friendship in the person living with dementia’s life.

EMCR Grant Development and Feedback session, 9.30am Wed 14 August 2024

You are invited to an EMCR Grant Development and Feedback workshop on 14 August at Burwood Corporate Centre.

Nature in Perspective: Therapeutic Horticulture in Photographs exhibition opens 20 August 2024

This group exhibition showcases multiple sets of photographic works by artists from local disability organisation Kevin Heinze GROW. Captured during a research collaboration with Deakin’s Institute for Health Transformation PhD Candidate, Megan Dennis, this arts-based ‘photovoice’ component of the project invited participants to use photography to explore their perspectives and experiences of therapeutic horticulture in the Kevin Heinze GROW program.

Date: Tuesday 20 August – Sunday 25 August. Opening Celebration 22 August, 4 pm – 7 pm
Venue: Box Hill Community Arts Centre, 470 Station St, Box Hill

These images are shared with the community to invite conversation about the purposeful use of nature and outdoor settings for health, wellbeing, and social connection, to understand first-hand experiences through the artists’ lens, and to reflect on the perspectives and narratives that emerge from the intersection of art and nature.

This exhibition forms part of a larger PhD research study supervised by A/P Claire Henderson-Wilson, Dr Joanne Watson and Dr Justin Lawson, School of Health and Social Development, Deakin University.

Logistic Regression 5 Day Masterclass tickets now on sale

Deakin Epidemiology is pleased to offer a summer Masterclass focused on Logistic regression to be delivered by arguably the world’s most famous teacher of this statistical technique – Prof. Stanley Lemeshow.

In years past, Lemeshow together with Ken Rothman offered back-to-back masterclasses in Biostats and Epi in Tasmania which were a bit of an institution, with many epidemiologists and biostatisticians building their knowledge and networks by heading south for a healthy dose of upskilling or as a refresher. Stan has agreed to offer this program onshore once again in Australia, this time at Deakin University’s Melbourne CBD campus 727 Collins Street, Docklands VIC 3008.

This 5-day course, 24-28 Feb 2025, will provide theoretical and hands-on practical knowledge and skills in statistical modeling with an in-depth focus on logistic regression analysis – the standard method for regression analysis of binary, multinomial and ordinal response data in health research.

Each day comprises a 4-hr class in the morning and a 2-hr practical session in the afternoon. And opportunities to network with fellow health and medical practitioners and researchers.

IHT All Members Day 6 August – Changing the narrative from Stigma to Inclusion

Thank you to everyone who attended our All Members Day this week. Such a great vibe in the room with many ideas and collaborations seeded!

It was a fantastic agenda exploring the topic of stigma in research and in health services with particular focus on diabetes, disability, obesity and mental health.

The day was kicked off with our two keynote speakers Amy Morgan and Chris Groot (both from Melbourne University) which really provided some great insight into the Mental Health Stigma and the work that has progressed in this space.  If you want to link with the stigma community further information is available via this link.

This was followed by a fantastic Lived Experience Panel with Philip Waters, Deaf Victoria, James McClure, Peer Support Worker, Barwon Health, Meaghan Read, Diabetes Victoria and Andrew Wilson, from the Weight Issues Network.     The session facilitated by Alison Coughlan, provided an interesting perspective from health service users who have extensive exposure to stigma for varying reasons.

Thank you to Alison Coughlan and Liz Holmes-Truscott for facilitating our Call to Action Workshop and for volunteers who helped facilitate the discussions on each table.

Final thanks goes to the Planning Group; Anna Urbanowicz, DoH, Liz Holmes-Truscott, ACBRD, Alison Coughlan, HCC, Guncag Ozavci, QPS, Tari Forrester-Bowling, GLOBE, Eloise Litterbach, ACBRD and Andrew Brown, GLOBE.  Their advice was critical in shaping an engaging and informing program of presenters.

Presentations from the day are available on the Members Portal via the following link:
