It is hard to believe it is autumn this week! While I am enjoying the weather I am already missing the long sunlight hours.

Thanks to our Executive Committee and Leadership Group for your work drafting our action plan for the year. It has been great to see so much energy and so many good ideas put forward to support you, our members, in achieving your research projects, partnerships and impact. I look forward to sharing the draft with you and getting your thoughts.

There has also been a flurry of grant announcements, congratulations to all those who have received new grants and fellowships (details below), and well done to all who applied, whether the grant was successful or not. The work that we do to develop our research projects is critical to develop our ideas, collaboration and partnerships and is always valuable. Congratulations also to our new graduands, and particular congratulations to Jaithri Ananthapavan, who was awarded an Alfred Deakin Medal for her outstanding doctoral thesis.

It was exciting to launch the new Centre of Excellence in Cancer Carer Research, Translation and Impact (Carer Hub) at Deakin.  Opened by Minister Mary Anne Thomas MP, Victorian Minister for Health and Paul Hamer MP for Box Hill, the Hub (co-directed by Professors Trish Livingstone and Vicki White) is a world first designed to support carers to improve the cancer patient experience.

You will have seen the final report of the Universities Accord was published last week. While it will take time before the government provides its full response to the 47 recommendations, this is an important opportunity for us, with its stated aims of improving equity and innovation in higher education, and recommending support for the full cost of research.

Finally, I encourage you to look through the new University leadership and training offerings. The new Deakin capability framework brings together thinking about the different opportunities to develop your capabilities, and has a range of training offerings through Skill_U and Cultivate_U. And a reminder to check out our Noticeboard section below for more work and development opportunities.
