I can’t quite believe it is May already. I hope everyone had a restful break over Easter and ANZAC day. And while I am loving the autumn leaves, I can’t help wondering where the year is going, as I am sure I do every year.
There has been a great deal of activity in the health and research space at a Federal level that is relevant to us. I thought I would share some links to the recent announcements regarding the Strengthening Medicare Taskforce report, and the subsequent funding announcements which will no doubt be fleshed out in the upcoming budget. Also, the raft of policy measures to tackle vaping announced by our Federal health minister at the Press Club this week. And finally with the current Universities Accord many of the submissions have significant recommendations for reform to how research is funded and administered through Universities. The Conversation has a series of invited pieces covering the Accord, such as this one from the outgoing ANU VC, Brian Schmidt.
I am pleased to draw your attention to the highlights below, demonstrating excellent representation of IHT globally this month, including the invitation of one of our early career researchers, Erica Reeve to attend a World Health Organization meeting in India as a regional expert. With our focus on EMCRs this year, congratulations also to Grace Arnot on publishing her first PhD paper. We are keen to profile your first PhD papers in the newsletter, so please let us know once yours has been published.
A shout out also to our Executive Committee. As we highlighted at the recent All Members Day, your leadership team has taken on additional responsibilities to support the development of 2023 actions for our Strategic Plan. I appreciate the work that they have already done in advancing our Plan and look forward to updating you further.
It was great to see you all at the All Members Day. Thanks to Maria Bubnic, Executive Director, Policy and Programs, Public Health Division, Department of Health, for sharing your insights with us, and to all of you who got into our IHT Talent Discovery Trail activity with gusto!
Thanks to everyone who attended our Burwood Morning Tea on 24 April. The next morning tea will be held at Waterfront on Tuesday. 23 May.
A warm welcome to our new member Nisha Sharma, Research Assistant, GLOBE.
