IHT Strategic Leadership Workshop – 22 March 2022
It was great to catch up with colleagues face-to-face and reconnect after a long hiatus.
The group provided some excellent ideas on improving collaboration and publication quality and enjoyed hearing from Nadia Levine about the direction of Research Australia.

Society for Mental Health Research conference
Professor Tony LaMontagne attended the 42nd annual Society for Mental Health Research conference from 24-26 March. During the conference, Tony delivered a keynote presentation on work as a social determinant of mental health. Tony’s presentation was covered live on Twitter by The Mental Elf, and a podcast episode can be listened to on SoundCloud.
Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Consortium (VCCC) Alliance Equity Advisory Group
Anita Lal has become a member of the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Consortium (VCCC) Alliance Equity Advisory Group. The aim of the group is to provide high-level expertise and strategic direction to VCCC Alliance Health Equity Program on development and implementation of strategies to address inequities in cancer outcomes across Victoria. The VCCC Alliance is made up of 10 research, academic and clinical institutions working collaboratively to integrate cancer research, clinical trials, and education toward better outcomes for cancer patients.
I-HEART project launch
The I-HEART project, led by Professor Andrea Driscoll, was launched at Swan Hill District Health on 29 March.
Swan Hill District Health is the first site for the roll out of $5million NHMRC I-HEART project in partnership with Deakin University and St Vincent’s Health Melbourne. The I-HEART project will implement key recommendations from heart failure clinical guidelines and improve access to specialist heart failure services. This project has the potential to keep patients out of hospital and save lives.
VicHealth Harmful Industries Fellows
Congratulations to Dr. Florentine Martino. Florentine is one of three new VicHealth Harmful Industries Fellows. Her research will focus on reducing health inequities caused by harmful industries to improve children’s wellbeing.
Communication skills training and 12 tips of talking about death
IHT members Debra Kerr and Professor Peter Martin have published an article on communication skills training for nurses in Patient Education and Counseling.
Peter Martin’s team have published an article in Medical Republic, which provides healthcare professionals with 12 tips on talking about death.
Peter also recently appeared on Growing Pains, a podcast hosted by Deakin medical students. Peter discussed death, dying and mortality in medicine, and how students might be able to better frame these experiences to process them in a healthy way.
